Teacher : “Now, Jim, if I lay three eggs here and five eggs there, how many eggs shall I have?”
Jim : “Well, to tell the truth, I don't believe you can do that, sir.”
풀이
lay[léi] (달걀을) 낳다.
how many eggs shall I have? 나는 몇 개의 달걀을 갖게 되는 것일까?
to tell the truth [trú:] 사실을 말하자년.
believe 믿다.
you can do that 너는 그렇게 할 수 있다. 너는 그걸 할 수 있다.
선생님 : “자아, ‘짐’, 만일 내가 여기에 달걀을 세 개 낳고, 저기에 다섯 개를 낳으면 달걀은 몇 개가 되느냐?”
짐: “저어, 솔직히 말씀드리는데, 선생님께서 그런 재주가있을 거라고는 믿을 수 없습니다."
[해설]
순진한 Jim에게는 여선생님이 암탉처럼 알을 낳을 것 같지 않았던 것이다.
I don't believe you can do that.(당신이 그것을 할 수있다고 나는 믿지 않는다)는,
I don't believe that you can do so. 의 that(접속사)을 생략한 형태,
이처럼 believe, say, tell, think 다음의 접속사 that은 생략되는 경우가 많다.
Do you know( that ) he started this morning?(그가 오늘 아침에 떠났다는 것을 너는 아느냐?)
He told me( that ) it was a lie.(그것은 거짓이라고 그는 말했다.)
